Regional Support Lead: UK
Ewan is the Regional Support Lead for the UK at We The Free. His journey into animal activism began while he was abroad in Kazakhstan, where he was served horse meat and realised he was being a hypocrite: he found eating one animal repulsive while accepting another. He came to see that no animal wants to die, and no animal needs to die for him.
For Ewan, simply refusing to take part in the injustice wasn't enough. He wanted to take what he had learnt and help others make the same realisation, so he became an activist.
He was drawn to We The Free by its compassion-led approach, rooted in the understanding that most people simply haven't been given the information or the space to truly consider what they are doing. Ewan believes that pre-vegans aren't our enemy, and that vegans should remember we weren't always vegan either. He has learnt to channel the compassion he feels for animals into his outreach.
Outside of activism, Ewan looks after himself by spending time in nature with his partner, volunteering at animal sanctuaries and cooking delicious plant-based meals.
Interests
Standing up against a social norm can be a terrifying prospect, and We The Free offers a community of compassionate people who lead with understanding—for vegans navigating a pre-vegan world, and for those who have not yet made the connection themselves. I love that we fight for animals not because we believe humans are bad, but because we believe humanity can do better. Working at We The Free has opened my heart in so many ways, deepening my relationships with the people I love while giving me a profound sense of purpose, community, and lifelong friendship. It reminds me of the best of humanity, and of what a small group of dedicated people can accomplish when they come together.
