How to start a WTF activism team

30 Second Summary

This blog post emphasizes the importance of taking active steps beyond just adopting a vegan lifestyle. It urges vegans to become activists and organizers to combat animal exploitation more effectively. Highlighting the passive nature of merely being vegan, it challenges readers to engage in activism to raise awareness and drive change. The post addresses common concerns about finding local activism opportunities and outlines how to start a We The Free (WTF) activism team, including support and resources provided by the organization. It concludes by encouraging readers to take action and become community organizers to make a significant impact.

If you’re not already vegan, become vegan. If you’re vegan and not an activist, become an activist. If you’re a vegan activist and not an organizer, become an organizer.
— Ronnie Lee (Founder of Animal Liberation Front)

While being vegan is great, it is in itself a non-action; a passive abstinence from personally taking part in animal exploitation. Think about this pig in a truck on their way to slaughter.

Would you feel completely at peace knowing that it’s not personally your fault they are in that truck, or would you want to tell them that you are sorry and you will use your voice to help other people make the connection that you have made?

Having inspiring conversations about veganism is incredibly powerful. Most people already have vegan values in that they are against animal cruelty, and YOU can inspire those people to alight their actions with the values that they hold by adopting a vegan lifestyle.

“I don’t know how to find activism near me” - this is something we commonly hear from people, but the truth is that starting a WTF activism team in your community is easy, and We The Free will help you every step of the way. Even if there is already a team in your community hosting events every month, you can help grow that community and host events more regularly. Here’s how to get involved:

  1. Apply to be an organizer. If there is already a team in your area, we will discuss with you and the existing organizer how you might work together.

  2. We will send you a resource pack including an organizer handbook and more information about WTF.

  3. We will have an induction call where we will teach you how to launch and promote your events, and how to use our MyStats platform.

  4. We will buy cards & signs for your team, and help you to launch and promote your event

  5. If you want to, we will assign a “buddy” - an experienced organizer who can help you with your first few events.

Once you have hosted 3 events, you can even apply for funding for more expensive equipment like TVs and Batteries! What are you waiting for? Get Involved!
